Research

History - Might want to find out about "Diary of The Master" It's normally a book kept by the Master listing events.
Have discussion with Betty Merck (Joint Master) or Bob Graft (Betty Merck might be the same person in the photo in the Bedminster History book and was Councilwoman for a number of years as well).

General Questions for Followup:

  1. The History - The Area
  2. Breeding of the Hounds - The pack of hounds....discuss the where they've originated and how the breed is strenthened or modified for this area and today's conditions (climate and terrain)
  3. Briefly met Bob Wilmerding (in his mid 70's? assume his grandfather is in the picture above?)
  4. Do you have a collection of historical artifacts, trophies etc? Who's in charge of it?
  5. Is there a James S. Jones Collection of Photos? I've seen a number of photos in books from his collection.
  6. How is the Master of the Foxhounds (or Master of the Hunt) selected and what is their normal term?
  7. (Names like Wilmerding, Merck are noted, how many of the founding families are still involved with EFH since it's incorporation in 1913? Anyone before that?
  8. Were there more than 2 clubhouses built in the area?
  9. What was the first major event held by the club in the Somerset Hills? When?
  10. Are you still involved with hound breeding and horse breeding?
  11. I read awhile ago about the possibility of the EFH trying to acquire the Brady Estate, which later became the Hamilton Farm Golf Club. What happened?
  12. What was it like when Jackie Onasis was involved with the EFH? Did the Secret Service have to ride as well?
  13. Back in 1954Somerset Medical Center of Somerville, NJ becomes the primary benefactor of the Far Hills Race Meeting. Previously, the event proceeds were used to fund the Essex Fox Hounds. It was said that if the social aristocrats wanted to engage in public libations and equine activities, they at least should benefit a worthy cause. The offer was first extended to Morristown Memorial, who rejected the offer. The second request was made with the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, who gratefully took the organizers up on the offer (J. von Stade discussion / 2006) Who coordinated this partnership event and why? Was it Henry Bassett, who had become the owner of Froh Heim the year before?
  14. Do you ever think about the past 100 years and if there's going to be another 100 years of foxhunting in Somerset Hills?
  15. What are the greatest challenges for the EFH today?
  16. Perhaps someone knows about the John Honeyman properties on Long Road? Where it was and did Charles Pfizer own any of it?
Link to Reference - The farm he purchased consisted of three different tracts, contiguous, the whole making an estate of about 400 acres. His first purchase was, Jan. 4, 1793, of John Bryant and Robert Blair of Bedminster, previously owned by David Henry. It contained 202 acres and the cost was 6 742.0.4. The next was, Mar. 20, 1797, Lot No. 19 of the "Peapack Patent," from James Parker, of Perth Amboy. Its acreage not stated, but the purchase price was 6 500. On the same date he bought of John Smyth, of Middlebush, 166 acres; consideration, 6 500. He must have owned in all, therefore, over 400 acres. The deeds were not recorded until Mar. 27, 1811. (Somerset Co. Deeds, Book F., pp. 322, etc.). These lands were bounded by the Lamington river land lands of Simon Hegeman and Hugh Barklay.

Conservancy Foundation buys 26 acres from Condict & Hugh Hyde
The children of Condict and Hugh Hyde (Brook Goode) , the Lamington Conservancy and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation cooperated in the effort to preserve the property, which includes both forests and fields.
